Official Quick Tips

Render Queue is the most efficient way to render out multiple projects.

The render queue is a fast and really easy solution that helps you batch render all the layers of your project at once, whilst allowing you to set and define each project’s parameters individually. Click render and leave your workstation to enjoy some well-deserved time off.

Applying Post - FX To Geometry

Limiting Post-FX like glow to certain objects in the scene is a great way to limit their effect to particular key objects. This helps create more complicated effects using simple connections.

Using Deformers on Clones is a really great way to create a complicated 3D mesh effect. For this to work, you need to convert the cloner system into a single mesh. This can be done using the combine geometry node, once done you are free to apply deformers to the new mesh.

Managing video resources in Notch is easy, we have a simple colour-coded system that shows you what state the video resources are in within your projects, along with an automatic system that keeps the files up to date with the latest version.

Here’s a video that demonstrates how it’s done:

Using a MIDI Controller with Notch
In this quick tip you will learn just how fast and easy it is to connect a MIDI controller to Notch and make your motion graphics scene an interactive and engaging experience for live shows, art installations and streams.

Viewport Scaling
Notch has a few different ways to scale the viewport as you work. This tip will show you the options for resizing, scaling and cropping. They can be found under “Project Settings” / “Rendering”.

Selection Sets

Selection sets are a useful way to create quick selectable groups of nodes, making it easy to quickly transform multiple objects repeatedly or to tweak the properties on multiple nodes.

Triggerable Envelope Modifier
This tutorial explains how to use the triggerable envelope modifier to create complex animations from a dynamic trigger.

Layer Precomp

The layer precomp is a simple yet powerful node, when used they allow you to take the visual output from one layer in your Notch dfx and push it into any other layer as an image. This is a great node to use for making complex techniques simple.

Duplicating Objects using Nulls
When populating content in Notch a really powerful tool is to use nulls as parents to duplicate single or groups of nodes around your scene. Using nulls in this way can also save you time, cut performance costs, reduce the number of nodes needed as well as keep your Nodegraph tidy.

Camera Focus Target
You can dynamically control your camera’s depth of field by using the Camera Focus Target node.
Parent it to a 3D Object or Null to control the camera’s depth of field focus plane.

Replace Node With (Notch Quick Tip)
Replacing nodes can be tricky if they are parent nodes with many dependants, the replace node with option makes the process nice and easy keeping all the original parameters and links.

Viewport Shading (Notch Quick Tip)
The Viewport shading options are extremely useful for looking into your scene and getting an idea of what’s going on under the hood. Whether it’s optimising a scene, or just inspecting the various passes, these tools make it easy to dissect a scene.

Using JavaScript in Notch (Notch Quick Tip)
Using JavaScript in Notch has a huge range of possibilities, and it’s easy to get data into and out of it. Just make sure your variables are declared at the beginning of the JavaScript file, and use the exact same variable names in Notch as you did in JavaScript.

FBM Deformer (Notch Quick Tip)
The FBM Deformer is a powerful way to improve the visual fidelity of a field system whilst minimising the impact on performance. It can also be used to create wild distortions of the field system with a very low performance cost.

Web GUI (Notch Quick Tip)
Web GUI allows you to control your project’s exposed parameters and layer selection. It’s a great tool for remotely controlling and altering fixed installs. It’s also perfect for demoing interactive scenes or even VJing, as it is touch-surface ready and works on any browser.

Particle Pre-roll Time (Notch Quick Tip)
Particle “Pre-roll Time” gives you complete control when visualising or rendering your particle systems. Rather than waiting for the system to get up to speed, use the particle pre-roll time to initialise the full simulation for when you need it.

Animated Baked Lighting (Notch Quick Tip)
Baked lighting on assets is not just for statically lit scenes. In this tip, we’ll show you how to bake the lighting from multiple lights to create animated baked lighting.

AI Denoising and RT Refinement (Notch Quick Tip)
The RT Refinement node is great at refining raytraced scenes, which could typically take time on complex scenes or when rendering out video. Using AI denoisers, you can reduce the number of steps needed to refine a scene, dramatically reducing the time it takes to render each frame.
