Whoops - solved. Mods can trash this post if they like.
Problem was solved by upgrading to current release ( r21.0.4 ) and also ensuring that the required mapping is specified in the sockpuppet bank editor in addition to patching the layer to be controlled. Took me a bit to figure that one out.
